It depends on where in the city you are thinking of...and how nice of a dinner you're wanting to have.
There a lot of family-friendly restaurants downtown that can be fun for everyone.
Buca di Beppo can be a lot of fun for everyone; it is a chain restaurant but it never fails, especially for a group. Its family style so you can order multiple entrees and share them. Its not too fancy and right off of Michigan Avenue so you can get your shopping in too. :)
Another chain that could be a good choice in the Cheesecake Factory. Although it does get a little loud when it's busy.
I also agree with the suggestion of Maggianos - it is italian food and has always been good - some portions are also on the larger size so they can also be shared (for the kids).
South Water Kitchen is located across from the River so it is also a great location downtown if you are out and about. They also have lots to keep kids busy with (crayons, etc) and a kids menu.
I would stay away from places like Bennigans just because my experience with service and quality has usually been more a frustration than enjoyable.
Hope this helps!!
