What are some good restaurants in Chicago (Gold Coast)?

I'm going to Chicago for a week, staying in the Gold Coast neighborhood. I'm looking for some inexpensive (entrees $25 or less) places for lunch/dinner. I'm traveling alone, so preferably places where I can bring a book or at least where I won't be looked at strangely :-) I'd like places that are representative of Chicago and are "favorites" of the locals. I like Italian, Chinese, sandwich places, burgers, vegetarian/organic...do not like Indian food.

I'll be taking public transportation and don't mind walking a mile or less, but I'd like to keep the total travel time to no more than 10-15 minutes. What are some good restaurants in Chicago (Gold Coast)?

This is an awesome place to get one of the best burgers around and enjoy a book!! It's also in the Golden Coast area!!

Hackney's on Harms - Glenview

Cozy and charming, Hackney鈥檚 on Harms is our original location, opened way back in 1939.

Across the street from the forest preserve, it鈥檚 one of those little out of the way places that鈥檚 actually not so out of the way. In good weather, you can enjoy a great meal under towering silver poplars on our lovely outdoor patio.
