I'm listing mostly restaurant options (not bar), since that's what you specified:
Sangria (http://www.sangriachicago.com )
Japonais Restaurant (http://www.japonaischicago.com/index2.ht鈥?/a> ) - The interior of this place is sensual. It sits along the Chicago River, and the lounge alone is something to check out.
Nacional 27 is the place to eat, drink, and get your Latin dance on. See http://www.n27chicago.com/ .
The Trump International Hotel %26amp; Tower Chicago has Sixteen, a fine dining restaurant on the 16th floor, of course. There are views of the Chicago River. See http://www.trumpchicagohotel.com/Food_Wi鈥?/a> .
You can eat and drink from the top of the loop in this rooftop bar (called Roof) at the new Wit Hotel. It's a pricey but interesting experience. See http://chicago.metromix.com/bars-and-clu鈥?/a> .
Carnivale (http://www.carnivalechicago.com - for some nuevo latino cuisine)
Rodan (http://www.rodan.ws/default.html ). Asian fusion, dark interior in the evening, sometimes a DJ.
Rumba (http://www.rumba351.com ) and other dining spots on Rush Street (i.e. the Gold Coast area) have a tendency to be trendy. Tavern on Rush (http://www.tavernonrush.com ) might work too.
Scoozi's (http://www.leye.com/restaurants/director鈥?/a> ) - a very open area space with Italian food. I've seen a major crowd of people (40+) have a cocktail reception there and then leave. Also, you may want to check out other Lettuce Entertain You restaurants.
Chef Rick Bayless' restaurants - http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/ for Mexican food.
Tavern at the Park (http://chicago.metromix.com/restaurants/鈥?/a> and http://www.tavernatthepark.com/ )
Sushi Samba Rio (http://www.sushisamba.com )
Le Passage (http://www.lepassage.com/ )
Here's a list of trendy places from Eats.com - http://eats.com/restaurants/illinois/chi鈥?/a> .
Otherwise, I recommend that you check out these sites for restaurant possibilities: http://chicago.metromix.com/ , http://www.wttw.com/main.taf?p=1,5 , http://www.centerstagechicago.com/ , http://www.190north.com/ , http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Hom鈥?/a> , http://flavorpill.com/chicago , http://abclocal.go.com/wls/channel?secti鈥?/a> , and http://chicago.citysearch.com/ .

Tru is great, but it's pricey.
N9ne, a steak and seafood place on Randolph, has one of the nicest cocktail lounges in the city. Pefect for a cocktail reception. The cocktail lounge at the Palmer House is also a good choice if you want to be more formal.
The bar at the Penninsula Hotel (which I think is just called The Bar) Is also a very trendy and popular spot but it's pretty small and might be a bit crowded for a reception.Where is a Cool Hip Chicago Restaurant in Chicago?
Either one of the W Hotels have nice lounges as does The Wit which is a newly opened hotel.
